Valentine’s packaging from GWD Ltd

Love is certainly in the air here at GWD!

Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion for many to show friends and family that they are loved. For GWD, it is the perfect occasion to help individuals box this concept up in a unique and special way. It is also important for companies who specialise in gifts such as chocolates and flowers to make the most of this celebration.

Gifts don’t have to be big – a little special something can have a huge impact.  Visually, one of the easiest ways to add finesse and class to a gift is all in the packaging. Our team of packaging engineers encapsulate ‘love’ every year without fail and we take great pride in providing both ideas and products which hold such importance for many. As you will see in this blog, we are able to give those all-important corporate and personal gifts a heart-felt touch.

Chocolate Boxes

DID YOU KNOW: over 36 million heart shaped boxes are sold every year in the UK alone? And that is where we come in… we like to think of ourselves as experts in this field…

Chocolate has been a popular choice for those in love for hundreds of years and gifting chocolate is said to have originated in 1861. When we think of chocolate, we think of Cadbury’s and it was Richard Cadbury himself (the founder) who started the heart-shaped box trend and so a new tradition was born.

Here at GWD, we are currently working closely with Rococo Chocolates who are luxury chocolatiers based in London. They place heavy importance on Valentine’s Day and of course, want to get their chocolate boxes right. They came to the right place! Here are some of the boxes that we created for them:

Flower Boxes

Much like chocolate, there is a huge demand for flowers at Valentine’s. Flowers can be absolutely stunning on their own, but we specialise in boxing them up so they behold even more beauty.

Victoria Blooms are a florist who like to deliver a modern-luxury edge to their flowers. Our team have captured this vision again for 2018. From the colours and shape, to the design and finish; everything about this box had to be perfect.

As well as the Victoria Blooms design, we produce more traditional flower boxes if a client is looking for something which is simple yet stunning. These flower boxes work well all year round for any occasion! Inside could be anniversary flowers or congratulatory flowers perhaps… the possibilities are endless!

Our Blog has spoken previously about round, ‘hat’ boxes and how GWD is one of a very few companies in the UK with the ability to create them. Circular boxes are perfect for floral displays and show off the beauty of any arrangement to great effect, whether it is for 12 roses or a much larger bouquet.

Below is an example of a hatbox which was created for an independent florist in Scotland. They wanted a small order which meant that they could sell their beautiful roses in style. This demonstrates that you don’t have to be a multi-outlet company to have great packaging. The boxes were matt black with eye-catching gold foil lettering which gives a truly upmarket, luxurious feel to the arrangement inside.

Love is in the air!

Love is in the air! With Valentine’s Day just around the corner we approach the time of year when couples traditionally exchange gifts as tokens of their affection for one another.  Whether you’re in the business of selling chocolates, flowers or even jewellery, we at GWD Ltd can come up with romantic packaging solutions for your product which will set young lovers’ hearts racing. This is our thirtieth year of creating  innovative and beautiful packaging, and among the projects of which we are proud are some of our designs for chocolates and flower bouquets or arrangements,

We worked with The Secret Truffletier (if that’s not giving too much away!) to come up with this beautifully luxurious heart-shaped chocolate box to give the best and most romantic presentation possible to their delicious confectionery. Covered in red suede, it’s wonderfully tactile, and helped to make their chocolates the perfect Valentine’s Day gift.

Range of 6 sizes of heart shaped chocolate boxes

We are also very proud of our work with multiple Academy Of Chocolate and International Chocolate Awards winners, Rococo Chocolates, for whom we made this range of luxury presentation boxes. They come in six sizes, from the tiny three chocolate box to the decadent 1kg version.

‘Hat’ boxes for flowers

And of course, it’s not just chocolates. We have designed a range of hat boxes, both with and without lids, which are perfect for gifts of flowers, as well as these gift boxes with ribbon handles (below) to perfectly showcase a floral arrangement.

If you’d prefer something bespoke to something off-the-shelf, we can either work from a specific design which you have in mind, or we can put our heads together and come up with something entirely new and unique based upon your own concept. We are not a wholesaler, we design and make the majority of our boxes here in the UK, meaning we have no minimum order requirement and total control over lead times. We are also happy to offer face to face meetings as required to discuss your requirements and can offer quotes by email or telephone. Manufacturing in the UK means we can also handle short notice arrangements when possible.

No matter what your Valentine’s Day packaging needs we can make the boxes for you. We relish a challenge, and are proud to have made boxes for customers all over Great Britain and beyond. Get in touch so we can discuss your perfect Valentine’s Day packaging.

“Wherever you go, go with all your heart” – make your product stand out this Valentines Day

We make heart shaped boxes in a variety of sizes

After Christmas and Easter, the period before Valentines Day is one of our busiest.  Given that we make presentation packaging for chocolate and flowers, you can understand why.

Of course, it’s not only GWD who look forward to Valentines Day for a welcome sales boost.  Following the post-Christmas lull, retailers all over the country look forward to February 14th as an opportunity to boost their sales heading to the end of the financial year.

Despite the fact that the day of Saint Valentine is often derided as a ‘hallmark holiday’ and the preserve of those in long-term relationships, there’s no doubt that it is still a crucial period in terms of generating revenue.

As with any major event that generates revenue for retailers, the trouble lies in the competition.  As we noted, chocolates and flowers are very common Valentines Day gifts and there are lots and lots of retailers selling them.  The question is: how do you get the customers to buy your product rather than someone else’s?

Your product has to be good

This is an obvious point, but one that people still overlook.  Given the competition in your sector, the most important thing you can do is to ensure that your product is worth buying.

By that I don’t mean that your product has to be the chocolate or floral equivalent of haute cuisine; but it needs to have a selling point that makes it a sensible purchase.  It might be that it’s a sensible purchase because it’s cheaper than your competitor’s.  It might be that your unique chocolate recipe tastes better than anything on the market.  It might be that your brand name is so well known that a customer will automatically opt for your product.

I would like to suggest another factor along the same lines: it might be that your product looks good.  You know what it’s like when you go into a shop and your eye is drawn to a product.  The first impression is crucial to the sale, so it’s vital that customers get a great first impression of your product.

That’s where we come in.

Packaging products proficiently

Let’s take chocolate as an example.  In most cases, if you’re selling chocolate on the shelves of a chocolatier or a department store, your actual product is not visible to the customer.  Your product is placed in some sort of box, and – all of a sudden – you’re selling your product on the strength of the first impression of that box, not the first impression of your product.

Therefore, it’s very important that your packaging can sell your product for you.  Maybe it needs to be eye-catching, giving customers a reason to investigate your product in more detail.  Maybe it needs to send the same sort of message as your product.  Whatever it is, the first impression your product gives off is the difference between gaining and losing a sale.

Declare your love with a heart shaped box

A Valentines Day example

To illustrate what I mean, I’ll use an example of a product that is one of your specialities.  In terms of images associated with Valentines Day, hearts come pretty close to the top of the list.  Therefore manufacturers want hearts featured as part of their product in order to say ‘this is for Valentines Day’.

Generally retailers will do this by having hearts printed on the packaging.  But say you wanted to go a stage further and really incorporate the Valentines Day message into your product.  You’d make your packaging (the first thing the customer sees) a physical representation of a Valentines Day gift.  One way of doing that?  A heart shaped box.  Rather than just printing hearts on your packaging, why not make your packaging an actual heart?  It stands out, and it explains exactly what it’s for without any confusion.  As one of the very few companies who make heart shaped boxes, lots of customers come to us for that precise shape.

Little and large heart shaped boxes

Over the last few years, Valentines Day spending in the UK alone has risen to well above £2 billion.  The retailer’s share of that income is at well over half that amount.  Given it’s size, retailers will know that getting Valentines Day wrong can have catastrophic implications for a business.  For that reason, it’s crucial to leave no stone unturned in order to sell your product.
